Bye bye, big forehead

If you have ever wanted a smaller-looking forehead without anything drastic, long-hair FUE is such a low-key game changer. It brings your hairline forward using your existing long hair, so no need to shave and it looks natural from day one.

I flew to China to do this and then off to Seoul—here is why I chose it, how it actually felt, and the things no one tells you.

AT ONLY $2,500 USD for the hair transplant on the Elite Explorer membership.

Pre-Consultation: Start Here

Before you travel, everything begins with a proper virtual assessment. Le-Medica coordinates the logistics so you can focus on showing your hairline clearly—not on scheduling headaches.

Virtual call with the doctor (Le-Medica arranged)

Book your video consultation through Le-Medica. They set up the time slot, connection details, and any translation support you need. On the call, the doctor reviews your goals, hair loss pattern, and whether you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Before the call: take clear reference photos at home so the team can evaluate density, hairline shape, and donor areas—use the guide below as your template.

Reference example for consultation photos: three-panel view with profiles and front.
Photo reference (three angles): right profile, front/top with hair pulled back from the hairline, and left profile—same lighting and plain background. Match this framing before your virtual consult so the doctor can plan accurately.

Why This Happened

Growing up as a ballerina meant one thing: my hair was always pulled back into the tightest bun possible. No baby hairs, no fringe, nothing to soften it. Over time, I started noticing my forehead looking higher and higher, and it slowly became one of my biggest insecurities.

Being a programmer who pulls all-nighters did not help either. That combination of tight styling and stress led to noticeable hair loss over the years.

It was not something people necessarily pointed out, but you know when you notice it, you cannot unsee it? I tried everything—styling tricks, parting my hair differently, even convincing myself it was not that obvious. But deep down, I knew it bothered me more than I wanted to admit.

  • This was not about perfection. It was about feeling more confident in my own skin (and hairline).
  • I had spent years hiding it with styling choices that kept the insecurity alive.
  • At some point, I realized the only real solution was to address it directly.

Why China (Not Korea or Thailand)

I consulted in Korea, Thailand, China, and Malaysia. Here is what made China the clear winner:

Cost

How much lower? My transplant landed around $2,500 USD, while comparable Thailand or Korea quotes I shopped were often about $6,000 USD—so well over 2× (and some clinics get closer to ) for a similar tier of care. The ROI made this feel like an investment, not a luxury.

Experience

Clinics there handle an insane volume of procedures. The surgeons are not doing this occasionally—it is their everyday work. Hundreds of procedures per month.

Technology

It is not generic plug-and-play—there is a special technique to long-hair FUE. Hair has layers to it: softer, finer strands in some zones versus thicker, coarser hair in others. My team planned around those differences—donor caliber, angle, and blend—so the hairline did not read like a stamp.

Results

They had incredible before/afters that did not look "done." They were subtle, natural, and actually solved the problem.

Regional price snapshot (quotes I compared)

Apples are not always apples on graft counts—but this is what was on my spreadsheet. Approximate USD uses rough FX (rates move daily; run the numbers yourself before you fly).

DestinationWhat was quotedLocal currency~ USD (est.)
ThailandHair transplant · 2,200 grafts250,000 THB~$7,100–$7,600
MalaysiaHair transplant · 2,000 graftsRM 30,000~$6,600–$7,000
South KoreaLong-hair FUE–tier band (quotes I saw)₩8.25M–11M KRW$6,000–$8,000
South KoreaHairline-only tattoo / SMP touch-up (not a full transplant)—still wanted a cleaner frame before committing to surgery~$1,000

FX ballpark used here: ~35 THB per USD, ~4.55 MYR per USD, ~1,375 KRW per USD—illustrative only. Clinics and seasons change; this is my research snapshot, not a quote for you.

The 8-Hour Procedure (Detailed)

The experience was far less scary than I expected. Here is the real breakdown:

The Specifics

Graft Count

3,000 grafts extracted and implanted to rebuild my hairline and forehead area.

Reference: two trays of long-hair FUE grafts on gauze during surgery.
Small reference from the OR: what those grafts actually looked like on the tray.

Extraction Technique

Long Hair FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)—a precision method that preserves longer hair during extraction.

Source Areas

Hair extracted from the back of my neck and ear area—softer, finer hair that blends naturally.

Surgeon

Dr. Zhu operates at Shanghai Namei Medical Aesthetic Hospital—incredibly experienced, with hundreds of procedures per month. View Dr. Zhu's profile

The Measurement Reality Check

Before: 7 fingers from my eyebrows to my hairline (massive forehead)
After: 4.5 fingers (drastically improved and proportional)

That is the difference between an insecurity that controlled my styling choices and a forehead I do not have to think about.

What my forehead looked like (before)

Before surgery: selfie with hair pulled back, showing high forehead and hairline.
Before — same insecurity, different lighting. This is the forehead I lived with.

The Real Results

Real results take months, not weeks. But here is what happened immediately: I walked out with a brand new forehead and hairline.

Before hair transplant: hospital documentation photos.
Before
After hair transplant: frontal portrait and side profile.
After

For me, it was 100% worth it—not because it changed everything overnight, but because it fixed something that had quietly bothered me for years. The thing about insecurities is that they do not scream—they whisper constantly.

The Feng Shui Check

Before I made the final decision, I am not gonna lie—I used AI to analyze my facial ratios and ba zi (Chinese astrology) because I am superstitious. The forehead is related to wealth and prosperity, so I needed to make sure I was not messing with my feng shui. Passed the test!

What Actually Happens

Total time: 8 hours
Extraction: First 3 hours (done by Dr. Zhu)
Implantation: Remaining hours (team-based, 6 people total)

No joke—an 8-hour surgery requires a team of 6 to complete. They are extracting and implanting each follicle one by one with precision tools.

What I Actually Felt

  • Anesthesia: Most uncomfortable part (expected). But once numb, zero pain.
  • During extraction: Pressure and vibration, but genuinely not painful. I could sleep.
  • During implantation: Similar—lots of activity but no pain. Just mental fatigue from lying still for hours.
  • Surprise factor: How routine it felt for them. Like just another day at work. That actually made me feel at ease.

You are basically lying there while they carefully extract and implant each follicle. It is a long day but not a painful one. The surgeon's calmness was contagious.

Real Talk: The Evening After Surgery

So here is the thing nobody expects—I went to eat hotpot at 8:30 PM right after surgery. Yes, really. My body was ready, honestly. The catch? No beef, seafood, or lamb (inflammatory foods that affect healing). Broth, vegetables, and tofu were my friends that night.

Video: that same night in Shanghai — hotpot after the 8-hour procedure (still on the gentle menu).

My Complete Itinerary

Here is exactly how I structured my trip across China and Seoul. This is real, unfiltered details on timing and costs.

Luxxy Club is Le-Medica's women-only buddy-matching community: curated roommate pairing, travel perks, and upgrades for people on medical trips together—not a generic travel forum. I used it to split a walkable hotel with another woman on a similar Shanghai schedule.

Video: walkable hotel, shared Shanghai schedule, and the Luxxy match who made the trip feel less solo.

March 20 — Day 1: Consultation

Location: Shanghai, China

Arrived and had my initial consultation with Dr. Zhu. Measurements taken (those 7 fingers), discussion of goals, and procedure planning.

Cost: Hotel near the hospital = $50/night (walking distance). I shared with a roommate I matched through Luxxy Club (women-only buddy matching under Le-Medica).

March 21 — Day 2: The Surgery

Location: Shanghai, China — Shanghai Namei Medical Aesthetic Hospital

That morning started pretty calm—I did a blood test first, then had a quick consult with a GP. The hospital is super cautious, which I honestly appreciated.

They will not go ahead with the procedure if you are pregnant or even on your period—it is very much about timing it right for optimal results and recovery.

8-hour hair transplant procedure with Dr. Zhu and his 6-person team. 3,000 grafts from the back of my neck and ears. The first ~3 hours were extraction by Dr. Zhu; the implant tech and team did the rest of the day.

Evening: Went for hotpot at 8:30 PM (no beef, seafood, or lamb though!).

Cost: Procedure cost varies, but recovery treatments started immediately afterward.

Days 3-5 — Recovery in Shanghai

Location: Shanghai, China

Rest, minimal activity, lots of lying down to help the injected liquids drain quickly. Light swelling, redness, tiny scabs. Cannot wash hair yet (the itchiness is REAL).

Recovery treatments: Light therapy sessions = $40 USD

Activity level: Minimal. Staying hydrated, avoiding sweating, no exercise or sauna.

March 24 — Day 5: Fly to Seoul

Location: Shanghai → Seoul, South Korea

Flew out on day 4 (yes, international flight after surgery—totally doable but take it easy). Headed to Seoul for the next phase of recovery + aesthetic procedures.

Important: The liquid was still very much present at this point.

Day 6: First Hair Wash

Location: Seoul, South Korea

Got my first hair wash at a salon in Seoul (finally!). The relief was unreal. No more itching, hair starting to feel normal.

Post-op care: Antibiotics provided by Le-Medica team, careful washing protocol to protect grafts, and the recommended special shampoo—ask your Le-Medica assistant if you need help buying it before or after that first wash.

Days 6-10+ (1 Week in Seoul)

Location: Seoul, South Korea

While recovering from the hair transplant, I went full throttle on aesthetic procedures (because why not level up?):

  • Hair wash service = part of $200 USD bundle
  • Hyperbaric chamber sessions (accelerated healing)
  • Red light therapy (additional session)
  • Bonus procedures: Rejuran, Botox, Filler (because Seoul aesthetic culture is REAL)

Total recovery services in Seoul:~$200 USD (would have been cheaper in China, but Seoul's ecosystem is efficient)

Video: Seoul — add-on aesthetic appointments while I was still in recovery mode (hyperbaric, red light, salon days).

Cost Breakdown Summary

  • Hotel (Shanghai, 3+ nights): $50/night (shared with roommate)
  • Hair transplant procedure: My China path ~$2,500 USD vs quotes I saw around $6,000 USD in Thailand/Korea—often double or more (contact Dr. Zhu for your numbers)
  • Light therapy (Shanghai): $40 USD
  • Recovery treatments (Seoul): ~$200 USD for hair wash + hyperbaric + red light therapy
  • Pro tip:Same services would have been 30-40% cheaper in Shanghai, but Seoul's convenience + other procedures made sense for my itinerary

Recovery: The Honest Part

This was probably the part I was most worried about, but it turned out to be way more manageable than expected.

Days 1-5: The "Not-So-Cute" Phase

  • Swelling: From fluids injected into your scalp. Noticeable but not extreme.
  • Redness & scabs: Tiny scabs everywhere. Honestly? Not the cutest phase.
  • Cannot wash hair: For 6 days (yes, SIX). This is harder mentally than physically. After day 6 you will want special shampoo for graft-safe washing—your Le-Medica assistant can help you buy the right one.
  • Pain level: Zero. Just something you have to be mindful of.
  • Yellow bruising: I had some (my friend did not). Varies by person and genetics.
Video: the yellow bruising phase in real life — looks dramatic on camera, but it faded on schedule. Not everyone gets it to the same degree.

Post-Op Medications & Care Protocol

Antibiotics

Provided by Le-Medica team post-surgery to prevent infection. Follow the prescribed dosage carefully.

Activity Restrictions

No exercise, sauna, or excessive sweating for at least 10-14 days. Lie down as much as possible to help drain injected liquids faster.

Washing Protocol

Cannot wash hair until day 6. When you do, be VERY gentle. Avoid hot water. You will need a special shampoo meant for post-transplant care. Your Le-Medica assistant can help you purchase the right product locally.

Healing Aids

Light therapy, hyperbaric chamber, and proper sleep accelerate recovery significantly. Worth the investment.

The Liquid Drainage Reality

During the procedure, fluid is injected into your scalp for cushioning and precision. The key to faster recovery? Lying down as much as possible so this liquid drains quickly. Gravity is your friend.

Days 5+: Things Get Better Fast

Within about a week, things start looking much better. I flew to Seoul on day 4 and got my first hair wash on day 6 at a salon in Seoul—yes, really.

Around five days after surgery: out walking in Seoul.
About day 5 in Seoul — back on my feet, walking the city. Still healing, but already feeling more like myself.

What People Do Not Talk About: The Shedding Phase

The transplanted hair actually falls out before it grows back. This is normal and expected, but emotionally? It can be a trip.

Timeline for Visible Results

  • Immediately after surgery: You see results! Your hairline is literally reconstructed right there.
  • Weeks 2-4 (shedding phase): The transplanted hair falls out. Do not panic—this is normal.
  • 1 month mark: For me, new hair is already starting to grow in. But this varies per person.
  • 3-6 months: Noticeable regrowth for most people.
  • 9-12 months: Full results. By this point, people cannot even tell you had anything done.
  • The real gift: Even during the shedding phase, people could not tell I got anything done. Nobody pointed it out. The recovery is way less obvious than you would think.

The Growth Boosters I Used

Full transparency: I had access to a special growth liquid that is still under research (thanks to a friend). I also did:

  • Light therapy (Shanghai + Seoul) to help with healing and stimulate regrowth
  • Hyperbaric chamber sessions in Seoul for accelerated recovery
  • Additional red light therapy in Seoul
  • Proper sleep & hydration (sounds simple but makes a huge difference)

I think these boosted my hair survival rate and growth noticeably. The research liquid especially seemed to speed things up.

What Recovery Actually Feels Like

  • Days 1-2: You are tired from surgery, but pain-free. Rest is easy.
  • Days 3-5: You feel mostly normal but have to be mindful of activity. The itch from not washing is the hardest part.
  • Day 6+: First wash feels like a spa day. Relief everywhere.
  • Week 2+: You can almost forget you had surgery, except for the tiny scabs.
  • Month 1: Shedding happens but does not look weird to others. You look basically normal.
